"Today," said Frannie, addressing her crew and three prisoners aboard the Japanese folks' boat, "is the first day of our war against Japan."
"Yee haw," said Sally.
The others were understandably dumbfounded.
"What did she say?" said Takumi.
"She... she said she's going to conquer Japan," said Nanami.
"No flipping way!" he said. "She's insane!"
"Did he just say I'm insane?" said Frannie.
"Yes, my husband said that you were insane," said Nanami in careful English.
"But of course he would. It has been," she said, launching into full speech-delivering mode, "far too long since the world has had one truly worthy conquerer. Hitl

"Nanami." Takumi's voice was barely audible over the waves, the wind, and the rapid, fearful heartbeat in Nanami's ears.
"What?" she whispered back. Her eyes were locked on their captor. She kept her sword pointed at Nanami, but she looking at her Frankenboat, waiting for the baseball-bat-girl to come back. Or... something. Nanami's hands were raised well above her head, just in case.
"She's distracted. Should I stop her?"
"From what? Only threatening to hurt us?"
"I can't just let her hold up the boat," he said. "It's an insult. And sh

In a land not too far away, on a cliff ominously facing the sea, on the porch of a house parked near the edge of said cliff, on a rocking chair next to a good-sized cannon ball, was Jebediah Satan.
He was an old man, and the years had not taken kindly to his bony frame. He sat on his rocking chair, watching the sea, minding the cannon ball, waiting for the moment to arrive when it would either strike dead its fated target or else rust to nothing in the cruel salty breeze. It held up well so far, but sometimes he swore that either his eyes were getting worse or the ball had gained a spot or two of rust like flecks of m

This far out to sea it was easy to forget about work, about slowly-thinning paychecks, about longer hours and less and less time together. When all they had was the boat, the sea, and each other, they were content.
Takumi had gone a long while without a bite, but really, catching a fish was more like an interruption than an event. He didn't need events; work had been full of them lately. Nursing the line, finishing off a warm beer, cracking a cold one fresh from the ice chest, resting back-to-back with his wife as she read a paperback novel... that was the best part of fishing. Nanami was the best part of life.
She cleared her throat

Her Satanic Majesty leaned into the controls. The wind and the lapping of waves against their Frankenboat. "Do you know what's the single most dangerous thing about the open sea?" Frannie asked after a long gap of silence.
"The sharks?" said Sally.
"No."
"Octopi?"
"No."
"Okay, one more... uh, going utterly insane from a combination of scurvy and staring at the featureless expanse of the ocean all day?"
"Yes, actually. That was very good of you."
"Man, that was just a guess! I kick ass." Sally patted herself on the back. Not metaphorically. The girl cou

Afloat in the sea was The Island Nation of Satanistan. Note italics. It was not a nation, because no other nation acknowledged its sovereignty. It was not an island; it was several stolen boats strapped together around a tiny beating heart, a lifeboat hastily dubbed The Great Satan. Altogether the ship housed three.
There was Her Royal Satanic Majesty Frannie Ducat, currently at the steering wheel, glaring at the cold sea with the attention a desperate 7-year-old gives his math homework. There was Margaret Clearwater, holed up in the sleeping quarters trying to dream away her floating prison and replace it with her warm bed on the mai
